A Scenic Three-Mile Train Ride:
The perfect attraction for young children in WI Dells
By Kelly Rush
Riverside & Great Northern Railway
N115 Cty Rd N, Wisconsin Dells (608) 254-6367
Website: www.randgn.com
About: It's a family-friendly museum that includes a snack shop, picnic facilities,
rest rooms with changing stations and a Museum Store with many fun, affordable
treasures from train & museum memorabilia, videos, music and baby toys to
Thomas the Train products, of course. Train rides, which are 1/4-scale steam
engine trains are scheduled nearly hourly and take you along a scenic 3-mile
roadbed winding through canyons, wooded areas and rock cuts beside the Dells
of the WI River. In 2009, they welcome two newly restored trains, along with
other improvements and updates to their museum grounds.
If you go: Be prompt (plan for restroom stops & purchasing your tickets from the store cashier).
Everything is in close proximity; from parking, to rest rooms, to getting your tickets and boarding the
train. It's pretty quiet, but the trains do fill up. During the ride, passengers have the opportunity to
stretch their legs, while listening to a brief history of RGNR by the Conductor. The train goes slow
enough for taking photos, but fast enough to keep kids in their seat. The train cars only fit two adults
plus two to three small children sitting, plus one on an adult's lap (I don't think they have restrictions
about that, but you should probably ask.) For safety, I would recommend no more than two young
children per adult. Bring a bag that will securely hold any belongings (camera, sunglasses or toys) so
they don't slip off the seat and fall out of the train car. Be aware that traces of coal dust stain
clothing, so wear casual clothing, dark or denim pants and be sure to wipe your seat.
Otherwise, it is a clean and well-taken care of train!
