A Practical
Organizing Tip for Your Home:

Are your kitchen counters covered in clutter?

Finding another home for clutter within your kitchen is still
possible, if you’re willing to rethink the need for other items
taking up space, such as the top of the refrigerator.  If so,
find another home for whatever you have on the top of your
fridge. Then place three or four shoe-sized, clear plastic
containers on top.  Use rectangular stackable containers
with lids, but keep them open to use easily.

Next, determine the four categories that cause the most
kitchen clutter and label the containers appropriately. This
will aid you later when sorting and finding a permanent
home for these items. Also, if you really don't like how they
look when company visits, simply put the lids on and
temporarily stash them in another room.

If you have a built-in refrigerator, try looking for space on a
counter, cupboard or shelf.  Some examples that might be
worthy of their own box:

  • Bills: place the envelopes in the open container,
along with a stapler, stamps, return address
labels, checkbook, a calculator and pen so bill
    paying is easier.
  • Medical: depending on your insurance, your
mailbox may be flooded with regular statements
from your insurance company, hospital or clinic.  If
these require your attention, keep them in a
    separate container.
  • Kids Stuff: if your children are no longer babies,
you’re familiar with the stray toy, barrette, necklace,
crayon or the cheap party favor that you can’t throw
    away yet.
  • Your stuff: collect and stash the stuff you don’t want
    to deal with until later.
