Organizing the Proverbial Household Clutter Intentional Use of Junk Baskets Have a junk basket in the area of your home that collects the most small clutter, and keep it as a regular fixture like kitchen counter. Clear out a drawer in your dresser and designate it as your junk drawer in your bedroom, or place a rectangular basket in half of your drawer Clear Rectangular Containers Clear, stackable shoe-size plastic bins with lids. These are my favorite thing in the world to spend $3 on! They are so efficient because they are not too big, they keep things stored within a specific category, and several of them will fit on a shelf, especially if stacked in 2's or 3's Batteries - got kids? then you need a full supply of a variety of batteries Cards, letters to save -designate a container for each family member, toss all special ocassion cards, as well as lists made of baby shower gifts, birthday gifts, etc. Office Supplies - staples, rubber bands, pen collection, binder clips, tape, scissors Toolbox Junk - string, extension cord, Craft supplies - little bottles of paint, glue, glitter, paint brushes, stamps & ink, ribbon Drawer Carts Hobbies, such as scrapbooking & rubber stamping. Use the deeper drawers for paper - stored in plastic envelope jackets, other drawers are good for mounting tape, stickers, embellishments, paper cutters, rulers, scissors, idea books, stamps. Office supplies - envelopes, paper, pens, stapler, phone book, batteries, chargers, cd's, folders, note pads Table-Top Plastic Drawers Bathroom cupboard (mom & dad) - make-up, q-tips, medicine, ointments, hair accessories Bathroom cupboard (kids) - hair accessories, bandages, chapstick, Office Desk - envelopes, notepads, stapler, paperwork, etc. |
You can purchase miniature plastic accordian-style envelopes with pockets, they're usually tabbed and come with labels. Label each with letters of alphabet (each pocket will need to share two letters, but if most of your shopping is Target, you may leave a pocket just for the letter "T". Go ahead and let receipts accumulate in your wallet, but when it gets too much take the time to sit and file them (try to leave the most recent in front for ease if you need it to make a return.) Leave the front pocket of the envelope for returns/credit receipts, so you can compare your bank or credit card statements to be sure you received the credit back For grocery receipts, keep them separate in a regular paper envelope, or use a miniature plastic envelope jacket (single pocket with a button & string closure - also usually available at Walgreens). You can look back through your receipts for budgeting or price comparing. Coupons can be filed similar to receipts, but trying to stay too tidy with coupons can waste time or become ineffective because they're not handy-enough. Another option is to keep them all clipped to a refrigerator magnet clip. Use one clip for grocery items and another clip for coupons to restaurants, department stores, etc. |
